Faith Relations »
Since its founding in 1984, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville has been blessed to work with more than 75 congregations and faith-based groups in our community. Numerous congregations have sponsored houses on their own while others have formed coalitions with long histories of faithful partnership in our housing ministry. To get involved with any of these coalitions, e-mail the contact person given below.

Lutherans for Habitat
Lutherans for Habitat has built 22 houses in the last 20 years. Pastor Richard Miller organized the group and has served as chair since 1992, with many of the group’s members also serving continuously. For the last several years, Lutherans for Habitat has partnered with Thrivent Builds, a four-year $105 million partnership between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity International designed to increase the Habitat ministry’s homebuilding production.
For more information about Lutherans for Habitat, email Don Diekmann or call him at (812) 477-1447.

Catholics for Habitat
Catholics for Habitat has built 19 houses, part of which were built prior to 2004 by east side and west side Catholic churches. The group has members from 18 Catholic churches in the community as well as a lay Catholic organization, Communion and Liberation. For the last several years, it has partnered with BBQ-ers for Charity to raise funds for builds.

Many UCC churches, including Bethlehem, Bethel, St. John’s East, St. Paul’s on Michigan Street, St. Paul’s German Township, Zion and Zoar have sponsored houses on their own or with one or two other churches. In 2011, Bethel sponsored the 400th home built by Habitat for Humanity of Evansville, the eighth for Bethel.

Methodists for Habitat
The United Methodists Churches are committed to building with families who need decent and affordable housing and sponsored homes in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011. The United Methodist District Fund contributed $10,000 toward the 2008 build, and Old North United Methodist Church contributed $25,000 toward the build in 2011.

Apostle Build
In 2006, the following churches joined together for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville’s first-ever Apostle Build: CenterPoint Community Church, Eastminster Presbyterian, First Baptist, First Seventh Day Adventist, Forest Hills Baptist, Korean Church of Evansville, Northside Congregational, North Park Baptist, Westminster Presbyterian, Westwood Baptist and the Potter’s Wheel. If you'd like to sponsor another Apostle Build, email Vaughn and Jane Peerman or call them at (812) 760-7832.

Interfaith Build In 2005, members of First Presbyterian Church, Temple Adath B’nai Israel, the Islamic Center of Evansville and First Presbyterian partnered in an Interfaith Build made possible through a gift from the estate of Charles and Mary Kerr Sperry.

Peace Build In 2011, a group of concerned citizens wanted to remember the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with a build that brought together diverse faiths in the spirit of understanding. The Peace Build grew from this initiative and was represented by Bethel United Church of Christ, the Islamic Center of Evansville, Memorial Baptist Church, Mindful Heart Buddha Sangha, Salem United Church of Christ and the Tri-State Hindu Temple. One of the highlights of the build was a Diversity Tour during which community residents visited the various partners to learn of their faiths.
