Current Projects » For each home it builds locally, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville sends a tithe contribution to help build homes in other parts of the world, including Jordan, Botswana and Haiti. Since the tithing program began in 1988, the Evansville affiliate has contributed nearly $900,000 and helped to house more than 300 families overseas. Habitat for Humanity International presented the Evansville affiliate with its Malachi 3:10 award in 2007 in recognition of it reaching the $500,000 mark in giving. At that time, only about 25 affiliates worldwide had received the award. In July 2011 a group from Evansville participated in a Global Village trip to Molepolole in Botswana and helped build two homes for families. For nearly two weeks, they shoveled sand, mixed mortar and stacked blocks, sharing in the blessings that come from helping one another. While the group recognized many differences in customs, there were also plenty of simlarities. Love for family crosses all cultures, and hope for a brighter future is as strong on the other side of the world as it is in the United States. "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room for it." |
